<p><span style="color: #000080;">I seem to spend a lot of time lately in You Tube, and recently I found  a guitar player that I have not been watching for a while, and came across Jeff beck, who in my opinion qualifies as one of the guitar playing greats.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000080;">My strongest memory of him is from his &#8220;High Ho Silver Lining&#8221; days, which I always thought had a great lead break, and I eventually learned to play it quite well, but no as good as Jeff Beck.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000080;">He seems to have changed his preference in music as well, and he’s got a style of playing that I have not seen anyone else using which I think is great.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000080;">Not only does he use his whammy bar a lot, but he also uses his volume and tone controls to make the unique sounds that he gets out of his guitar.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000080;">His choice of musicians for his band, which are all excellent in their own right, and the girl bass player is brilliant, her name is  Tal Wilkenfeld (hope I spelt that right) watch out for her in one of the video’s below.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #000080;">You can see that it&#8217;s very  chromatic and will require a fair amount of finger skill and picking  dexterity to execute, since it involves plenty of sweep-picking action.  Follow the fingering pattern indicated above the tablature and continue  the lick down the neck as far as you like. Also make sure you apply  and release tension to the frets at the proper time so that the notes  do not ring together. Other than that, there is nothing to worry about  and you should attack the lick with conviction. But as with most finger  exercises, use a metronome at first, starting off slowly and gradually  working up speed. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000080;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000080;">Our next exercise is actually  a chordal exercise. As far as being “proper” chords that one could  use in a song, some might consider that possible while others may not.  It depends upon your definition and taste for what is musical. Personally  I could see the chords below being played in a jazz context without  much trouble. Anyway, the following notes when strummed together do  have genuine names (although any combination of notes can be classified  in some way) which I will give below the tablature. </span></p>

<p><span style="color: #000080;">Repeat that pattern many times.  Notice that the fingering is somewhat similar to our previous exercise.  Use all four of your fingers, placing them in a way that seems most  natural when following the tablature. To get the open notes to sound  out clearly, you will have to first raise your middle and pinky fingers  while holding the other notes down, which is more difficult than you  might think. But it will definitely build finger strength. Give it a  whirl and show everyone how intrepid you are by attempting this challenging  chordal type exercise. The actual names of the chords above are C Major  7<sup>th</sup> and D 6<sup>th</sup> Suspended 2<sup>nd</sup>, the first  being a common chord, and the second an unusual one. </span></p>

<p><span style="color: #000080;">Again, concentrate on making  the open strings ring out clearly. Sometimes the fingers fretting the  continuous notes will touch the other strings when played open and slightly  mute them. You don&#8217;t want that to happen. The names of these chords  are C Major 7<sup>th</sup> and G 6<sup>th</sup> Suspended 4<sup>th</sup>.  Show them off to your friends and they will surely be impressed. With  this second chordal based exercise, we are simply raising up the fingers  we did not raise the first time, while continuing to hold down the other  frets. Again, this is fairly challenging. You will find that your fingers  do not want to move in the way prescribed by the tablature. But push  them to do so anyway because your hands and digits will grow stronger  and you will be able to play difficult passages of music with greater  ease. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000080;">If you don&#8217;t like the sound  of the strange chords above, just think of them as being part of a finger  exercise and ignore the harmonies. But remember that if the chords are  played in the right context, they can sound quite musical. </span></p>

<p><span style="color: #000080;">Let’s face it, finger tapping on the guitar can get pretty darn tiresome after awhile. Especially if you perform the Van Halen-style triplets that have been played a billion times (don’t get me wrong, I love Eddie’s playing, he was the reason I began learning guitar in the first place, and “Eruption” is one of my favorite guitar solos to perform live.) In this article, I am going to show you how to spice up those tapped triplets with an under-used but very musical and also flashy technique known as sliding taps.<span id="more-782"></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000080;">Frankly, I find it surprising we don’t see more guitarists executing tapped slides in the wide world of music these days since they are relatively easy to “pull off” (no pun intended) and they sound really cool. Tapped slides are performed by simply tapping with the index (or middle) finger of your picking hand in the normal fashion, then sliding up or down a certain number of frets to sound the beginning and ending notes, with a glissando between them. To see what I mean, try this lick:</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #000080;">Now those tiresome triplets have genuine flair and panache. Keep in mind that each note above is either tapped, hammered, or pulled, even though the hammers and pulls aren&#8217;t indicated in the tablature. Notice for the tapped slides we are tapping on the 17th fret, then sliding up two full steps (four frets) to the 21st fret (the S between the 17 and 21 in the tablature means to slide, of course), then we are pulling off to the D# and applying vibrato. The rest of the lick is simply a repeat of the first pattern except on the B string. Of course we could have slid up a smaller number of frets, but in my opinion the further one moves when doing sliding taps, the more audible it is and the better it sounds. You can execute the beginning triplets for more repetitions if you like (I usually do) before going into the sliding taps at the end. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000080;">Once you have that lick down, try this more subtle lick that uses the open G string and sliding taps that move up the neck. Again, every note below except for the first is either hammered, tapped, slid, or pulled. </span></p>

<p><span style="color: #000080;">Since the rhythms in guitar tablature are always difficult to indicate, a little explanation is in order. The first three notes are played quickly, then the tapped note on the 9th fret is held and vibrato applied with the fretting hand behind the tapped note. The four notes after that are played in the same manner. The slides from the 12th to the 14th frets are performed slowly and vibrato added there as well. Take care to make sure your tapped slides ring out forcefully and have the proper sustain. Try to make them sound as bright and prominent as regular picked notes. If you put an echo effect on this lick it will sound even better. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000080;">The subtleties involved in keeping tapped slides sustained are many. Proper string dampening is required, also delicate finger placement with your picking hand when tapping. Of course this technique will get cleaner and easier with extensive practice.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #333399;">One of the most popular musical instruments used in various popular music genres, acoustic guitars date back over 5000 years ago. Acoustics come in many different styles. Depending upon the music genre you would like to play, each will boast impressive playing features, as well as different resonating sounds.<span id="more-752"></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">There is no mistaking the distinctive look of an acoustic guitar-with its single sound hole, as well as the six strings that most of them have. There are actually various classes in the world, the most popular of which would be the steel string and the classical types.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">Unlike electric guitars, acoustic guitars have their own means of amplification, in the form of its hollow body. The hollow body and single sound hole allows for the resonance of the sounds produced by the strings. Smaller bodies produce lower tones, while larger bodies are capable of producing heavier/deeper tones. Some are designed with cutaways, which basically impact the overall general sound.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">Steel stringed acoustic guitars are, obviously, fitted with steel strings. They often come in various shapes, made from various materials; the most popular of these materials would be wood. They also have narrow necks, and produce a distinct sound.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">Now, <span style="text-decoration: underline;">classical acoustic guitars</span> differ from ones with steel strings in a couple of ways. Classical have wider necks, and instead of steel strings, they use nylon strings. These nylon strings produce softer sounds compared to ones with steel strings, making them perfect for playing classical pieces.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">Rock, Country, Alternative and Pop generally use steel stringed acoustics. Folk, Ragtime and country blues generally use classical, as the finger picking nature of these genres are perfect for them.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">A weak sustain is also one of the many things that stand out about acoustic guitars. A weak sustain means notes would easily face after being struck. Electric guitars, coupled with special effects, have higher sustain values over acoustics, but this doesn&#8217;t mean all acoustics have this limitation. Certain acoustics, like concert guitars, feature good sustain, resulting to good overall performance.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">If you are looking to learn how to play guitar, getting an acoustic guitar would be the best way to start, as they are the most basic of guitar type.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #333399;">It’s difficult to really define what <em>Rock and Roll music</em> is, or where it really started, but <em>Rock and Roll</em> is definitely when <strong>guitar playing</strong> as we now know it started.<span id="more-630"></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;"><strong>Elvis Presley</strong> must be given some of the credit for it, with his hips swinging and the raunchiness of the songs, although he did not really <strong>play guitar</strong> well at the time. He did however start the craze of screaming girls at his shows, it was all about sex really, and in fact that is how it got the name <em>Rock &amp; Roll.</em></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">The roots of <em>Rock &amp; Roll</em> go back to the late 40´s, and were influenced by <em>blues and gospel </em>music later the big band <em>swing</em>, and <em>rhythm and blues</em>; it was also influenced by <strong>country guitar music</strong>.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">Some of the artist´s of the time such as <strong>Elvis Presley</strong> with <em>“That´s Alright Mama”</em> and <strong>Bill Hayley´s</strong> <em>“Rock Around The Clock”,</em> at the time the piano was the main instrument in the band, until <strong>Chuck Berry</strong> turned up with songs like <em>“Johnny Be Good”</em> with that famous <strong>Guitar Riff</strong>, which we still hear today.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">I had the pleasure of seeing <strong>Chuck Berry</strong> playing live in Leicester, England; he was 64 years old then, but <em>still Rocking</em>, a great show.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">England’s answer to <strong>Elvis Presley</strong> was <em>Cliff</em> <em>Richards and the Shadows</em>, (which were basically an <strong>electric guitar band</strong>) with <em>“Living Doll”,</em><strong>Cliff</strong> didn´t make it big in America, but he is still going strong in England at the ripe age of 80 and has just released his latest album.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">In the early 60´s we saw the start of what was to be called <em>“The Swinging 60´s” </em>or sometimes <em>“The Golden Age of Rock and Roll”,</em> the biggest Band was <strong>The Beatles </strong>who when they played could not even hear themselves because of the screaming girls, and poor P.A. systems.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;"><strong>The Beatles</strong> were the first British artist´s to make it big in the U.S.A.; they were unique then as they wrote most of the song´s that they performed, and in fact they changed music, and the rules of <em>the music</em> we hear today.<a href="http://www.countryguitar-lesson.com/reviews/country-guitar-lesson-blues-guitar-riffs-metal-guitar-and-the-beatles-effect" target="_blank"> Read More About The Beatles here</a>.<br />

<p><span style="color: #333399;">They also wrote <em>“I Wanna Be Your Man”</em> which became the first hit record for the <strong>Rolling Stones</strong>, who also made it in the United States, and they still perform <em>sellout concerts</em> to this day, even at their age, so there’s hope for us all yet.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">In the late 60´s-early 70´s we had the <em>Glam Rock</em> and the <em>psychedelic era</em>, and saw bands such as <strong>Jefferson Airplane</strong>, <strong>T Rex, Mud</strong>, and <strong>Wizard </strong>as well as <em>Jimmy Hendrix and David Bowie</em>, the style of guitar playing became more aggressive with a rise into <strong>Hard Rock</strong> and <strong>Heavy metal</strong>, we saw <em>AC/DC, Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin.</em></span></p>

<p><span style="color: #333399;">It is my belief that <strong>Rock and Roll music</strong> will be with us in some form or another for a long time yet, and people will still be influenced by it, and will continue to buy records and <em>learn to play guitar</em>, whichever style of <strong>music</strong> they choose to play, it is all related anyway.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #333399;">Well firstly <strong>The Beatles</strong> incorporated and used all the different styles in their music, and in their songs, but not only that, <strong>they also changed</strong> what was acceptable in music and what was not acceptable.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;"><strong>Paul McCartney´s father</strong> was a concert pianist, and when Paul was sat at the piano composing a song, his father would come into the room and say to him “Paul you can’t do that, it´s against the rules of music”, and Paul would say in return “well I don´t care it sounds good to me”, so he did it anyway.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #333399;">A lot of what <strong>The Beatles</strong> did at the time was considered unacceptable by the musical academic´s, but it was obviously acceptable to the record buying public. It was not unusual for <strong>The Beatles </strong>to have more than one record in the top ten in England at the time, and not only that but they often occupied number 1 and number 2 positions as well.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #333399;">In the song Hello Goodbye the ending was achieved by playing the song backwards which again works. They introduced guitar feedback although it was by total accident, as <strong>George Harrison</strong> had left his guitar leaning against his amplifier whilst recording I Feel Fine, they left it on the record as they felt it was unusual and they liked the effect it had. Also in I Feel Fine was a great guitar riff that George played throughout the song which was again unusual.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">Although Paul and John overshadowed George and Ringo, this was not intentional; in fact George was a good song writer in his own right, just think of songs like Something (in the way she moves) and Here Comes The Sun, and quite a few other songs including While My Guitar Gently Weeps, on which he had his friend Eric Clapton play lead guitar.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;"><strong>George Harrison</strong> was also a perfectionist; he would practice his guitar parts until his fingers bled on occasions. <p><span style="color: #333399;">Well as I have said before, I think that it is unfair of me to review the different programs that I have on this site, for I would tend to send you to my own personal favorites and I believe that what is right for me may not be right for you.<span id="more-293"></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">What I will say though, is that I like the way that<strong> Marty Schwartz</strong> teaches you in an easy to follow way, no matter whether you are a beginner or you are an <em>advanced player, </em>you will find his<strong> lessons</strong> good.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">My advice to you is to look through <strong>all the lessons</strong> on this site, a lot of them have<strong> free trial lessons</strong> that you can subscribe to, and I suggest that you subscribe to as many as you can, so you can form an opinion on which one you should purchase.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">Now I know that a lot of you will be thinking why should I purchase any of them when there is so much free stuff out there. My answer to you would be do you want to <strong>learn how to play properly</strong>, or do you want to be able to play a little of this and a little of that? Because that is all that you will ever be able to do by trying to learn that way.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">When you have decided which program you want to join, I suggest that you stick with it, <strong>remain absolutely focused</strong>, do not try to rush it because<strong> practice makes perfect.</strong> So master one step at a time before you move on to the next stage.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">Avoid jumping from <strong>program</strong> to <strong>program</strong>, this will help to stop you getting confused with <strong>information overload.</strong> I also encourage you to stop going to YouTube and learning things from there or you will pick up the bad habits that some of the guitar players have.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #333399;">When you have learned the basics and can play a few chords, it is a good idea to <strong>find someone else </strong>who is at a similar level, or preferably a bit better than you to <strong>practice with</strong>. Then as soon as you can, <strong>form a band</strong> or join one. This will make you <strong>more committed</strong> to learn to play better. There is no better way to <strong>improve your playing</strong> than this, anyway why else would you want to learn? It´s pointless unless you <strong>want to perform. </strong></span></p>
